2023 Ironman 70.3 New York – Jones Beach

2023 Ironman 70.3 Jones Beach New York Race report Back in 2019 I had been contemplating coming out of long course retirement and entering another 70.3 race, but then covid hit and well, you know.  Fast forward to the beginning of 2023 and I was down in Austin, Texas attending Endurance Exchange when I found out that a Jones Beach race had been confirmed and early bird registration was opening while I was there.  At this point I was about 3 weeks into a streak of consecutive days of activity, (I’m currently at 268 days as of this writing.) and…

Team Barracuda Athletes Compete In Exciting High Performance Triathlon

Clermont, FL – The Clermont Draft Legal Challenge(www.draftlegalchallenge.com) is one of a number of showcases for the future of Olympic style triathlon in the US. Athletes from 13 to their early 20’s compete in different races on multiple days in this fast paced and exciting version of the sport. Triathlon consists of three sports, swimming, cycling, and running. In draft legal races, athletes are allowed to ride in close knit packs enabling them to share the work and ride faster. This is the style used in the Olympics in Rio this past summer. Drafting works as an advantage for the…

Tom S. 2016 Age Group National Championship – Omaha, NE

USAT Age Group Olympic Distance National Championship Pre-Race This being my second Age Group National Championships, I learned a bit from my time last year and focused a lot on my pre-race plan. In 2015 I spent a huge amount of time and energy on pre-race anxiety because I had not fully planned out my pre-race experience. This year, I came up with a detailed itinerary planning out every moment from the time I woke up on the morning of my flight, spanning to the start time of my wave two days later. I planned out all of my meals,…

Lee’s 2016 SOS Triathlon

This is a great race! The atmosphere is very different than any other race I have done. Not corporate at all. It is well organized and structured while also have a very local feel to it. The organizers are passionate about this race and go to great lengths to make it successful for all involved (racers, community, volunteers, Mohonk Mountain House, Minnewaska State Park, sponsors, etc….) Getting In: To sign up for this race I needed to sign up at 12am on November 1st (late night Halloween). I tried for the 2015 race, but got shutout. This year I practiced…

2011 TOUGHKids and TOUGHMAN Triathlons

On September 10th and 11th I had the opportunity to experience triathlon in a whole different way. I was not a participant, but employed to help produce the event and it was an eye opening experience that I will not soon forget! On Saturday the 10th, I had the privilege of serving as the Race Director of the TOUGHKids Championship Race. This was the culmination of a four race series for kids that had events in Connecticut, New Jersey, West Point, and finally in Croton-on-the Hudson. The age groups were 4-6, 7-10, and 11-14. The distances for each were 20yd…

2011 Pat Griskus Tri – NE Regional Championship

The saying, “what can go wrong, will go wrong” has some merit. I’m more inclined, however, to go with “if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we’d all have a Merry Christmas.” You can sense how this report is going to go, so let’s get on with it. The Pat Griskus Triathlon takes place up in Middlebury, CT. The venue is the Quassy Amuesment Park. I have to say that without a doubt, it was one of the most difficult Olympic distance tris I’ve ever done, maybe the most difficult from a biking standpoint. I will temper that sentiment…

Westchester Toughman Half Triathlon

On Sunday, September 12th, 2010 I raced the Westchester Toughman Half Triathlon. It is a Half Ironman distance race, which means a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike, and a 13.1 mile run. This was the 3rd year of the event. It was by coincidence that I happenned to enter the Toughman this year, especially since I did not plan to do a race of this distance in 2010. I wanted to stick to the short and fast stuff in order to get back to running fast. My “A” race for this year was to be the NYC Triathlon,…
