Miguel Periera and Roger Wacker were there but neither one finished. Smilf said Roger's knees are shot and he was not planning to run. I'm still trying to find out about Miguel.
Hopefully they will post reports since this was the first year for the race.
Anyone signing up for 2010? Jana?!

I would love to do it - but only if I have a bunch of training partners again who I can hit the beach with afterwards!

Better hurry, it's filling up fast!!

I'm with Kathleen...I'd be willing to do it if I have training partners. All the other late season IMs (IMAZ and IMFL) are full already. Hmmm, thanksgiving in Cosumel....

By the way there are some race reports in the slowtwitch forum. They are generally positive, sounds like they got lucky on the swim and had some minor 'freshman' race issues here and there.

I talked to Roger Wacker this afternoon (he works in my building and I run into him every once in a while).

Briefly, he mentioned that it was very windy on the bike, bags were very disorganized (i.e., in a pile with no organization), post race bag pickup wasn't any better.

He said it was a good race, and once it gets through it's freshman year, it should be in good shape.

I'm guessing they don't get as many volunteers as the IM events do in the US (folks wanting to be in line first to sign up for next year, students needing community service hours, local groups...).

Texted with Miguel P. He said he felt fine on the bike but allowed himself to get dehydrated and did not know it. Ended up with an IV in his arm at the half way point of the run.

First of all, let me start by saying that the IM Cozumel was an awesome race and that I fully recommend it to everyone! Organization was very good (especially considering it was the first time) and the island's support was just amazing. I am sure this is going to become one of the most popular IMs around.

Yes, I didn't finish to my disappointment, particularly because I was in great shape and felt physically strong throughout the race. To make a long story short, I underestimated the high humidity and got very dehydrated without even noticing it until it was too late. The high humidity along with the wind in the bike segment are a dangerous combination and I certainly learned my lesson. I made several mistakes, including not properly hydrating the days before the race and taking 3 gels and 2 bars on the bike without adding extra water to dissolve them. I was drinking what I thought was quite a lot of Gatorade, but no water. I wasn't thirsty at all throughout the bike so I didn't see it coming. When I got off the bike is when I felt the first symptom: I felt I needed to go to the bathroom but I couldn't pee. I started running (very uncomfortable by the way; ever had a urinary track infection? that's how it feels!) and stopping at every aid station to drink water and pee, but my symptoms kept getting worse. By the time I was at around mile 12 I couldn't run any more. To make things worse, given the lack of improvement I started worrying about the opposite, too much water since I drank and drank, so I made a big mistake and stopped drinking around mile 10.

A problem with the organization I found was that they had no medics along the run course, only at the medical tent at the finish line. If I had found one, I would have probably been told to stop for 15 min and drink drink drink, and I would have probably finished. In any case, it was a big lesson learned for me. You can be in the best shape ever (I did a negative split in the second half of the bike) but make a mistake with nutrition and screw everything up!

As for the race, the swim is just amazing with clear waters, fish and scuba divers to entertain you as you complete the 1 loop course. The bike is challenging because the east side of the island has strong cross winds most of the time (on Sunday that was added to a head wind down the east coast), so be prepared for that. The run was good, plenty of aid stations and a lot of support from the spectators.

Anyway, I already signed up for next year to finish what I started this one. I was given bib #777, so if you are planning to sign up do so because I expect it sell out soon.

You can borrow mine...no charge! You will have to remove the handle bars, seat and pedals. I haven't used it since 1985 so I hope it still holds up, ha. It's a sturdy plastic, though.
